Today, more and more brands, businesses, and influencers are embracing storytelling on social media. Social media storytelling involves using social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, etc.) to tell stories directed towards a specific audience. Today, we’re going to talk about 5 Storytelling Trends for Social Media
Storytelling is a powerful way to share your brand and values, build a community of loyal followers and engage with your audience. There’s a reason it’s called social media – people want to be engaging on these platforms – whether that means reflecting on a story you share, resharing it with their friends, or reaching out directly to build a connection.
The key to storytelling on social media is to keep your content relevant, entertaining and relatable; if you are only focused on selling via social media, you will drive away many potential followers. People want to connect with and support authentic small businesses. The more you focus on providing value to your audience, the more they will trust you as the expert.
If you want to start sharing impactful stories, here are …
Five storytelling trends for social media you can start using today:
Short, Visual Takeaways
While you may want to include all the tiny details in your story, remember that social media is about creating short, consumable, shareable content. Many users share critical takeaways from blogs, podcasts, or book excerpts (think visuals such as IG carousels) and encourage their audience to access the full version if they want to dive in deeper. This helps to expand the reach of your story while increasing traffic to your page, website, products, or services.
Personal Story/Share a Moment in Your life
Emotions drive people to take action; sharing a personal story from the heart allows people to get to know you while also boosting engagement. For instance, I recently attended an incredible mastermind in Puerto Rico; throughout my trip, I shared photos of the scenery, people I met, and some tips and takeaways.
Behind the Scenes
We all know that what we see on social media can be diluted by filters and pretty backgrounds. A great way to relate to your audience is to share the real behind-the-scenes. Video is an excellent medium for this – bloopers, your creation process, etc.
Share Your Values
Share your brand story, why you do what you do, your valued team members, or even a little about yourself (it’s never a bad thing to re-introduce yourself). This is the perfect way to connect with your community and make your brand more personable.
Community/Impact Stories
Share stories of connections you have made in your community and how your products/services are used. Don’t be afraid to let your community members share their journeys and stories of transformation. Elevate the voices of others – this is especially important if you already have a big audience.
Social media was meant to connect people, not just be a tool for endless scrolling. So start using these storytelling trends today to expand your impact!
