You are likely wondering what’s next for storytelling trends for 2023 (and beyond!)
One thing is for sure – storytelling is here to stay and will likely evolve in the upcoming year. So, buckle up and get ready to keep sharing your stories!
Storytelling Trends for 2023
Here are four storytelling trends brands and creators are likely to lean on more and more to stand out from the crowd:
Trend #1: Video storytelling
Visual storytelling was a big storytelling trend in 2022, and we are likely to see this continue into the new year with more and more creative ways for businesses and creators to tell stories through video.
Video storytelling draws people in, conveys emotion, and makes audiences feel more connected (or not) to the content, creator, and brand values.
The two key ways to use video storytelling are through “film style” videos that tell the story of someone else or “creator videos” where you, as the storyteller, are face to face with the camera.
Creator videos allow you to showcase your personality to your audience to draw in the clients and customers that best fit you. “Film type” videos require a budget or some filmmaking expertise but can be equally impactful. Check out this blog post for some examples of the ways businesses have used “film style” videos to tell their brand’s story.
Trend #2: Short-form content
Your content doesn’t have to be long; shorter content that is more attention-grabbing is likely to be much more impactful – after all, our attention spans seem to be getting shorter by the day. This applies to videos, text in social media content, or even blogs. So quick and to the point is often your best bet.
Coupling your short-form written content with a compelling visual or video is a great way to tell your story while benefitting from the reach of multiple storytelling mediums.
Trend #3: Customer-driven storytelling
This type of storytelling puts your customers at the heart of your stories.
It involves sharing community content that demonstrates how products and services are being used and also includes reviews & testimonials. One company that does a great job of sharing customer stories is Airbnb.
Remember that people are much more likely to work with you or buy your products if you come highly recommended. This is important to build credibility and loyalty.
Trend #4: Data-driven storytelling
This storytelling trend involves crafting stories based on data-driven insights.
Before I lose you here, you need to think about how you can stand out because you may think that data makes for a boring story, with over 600 million bloggers and a growing number of creators worldwide. Using data to understand your audience better allows you to get to the point more quickly and cuts through the “content noise” by giving your audience exactly what they are looking for.
This type of storytelling may involve using trending keywords or searches to tailor your content or sharing data in a way that will intrigue your audience. But, of course, remember to keep it authentic.
For example, the Spotify end-of-year review is an excellent example of data-driven storytelling. It tells you the story of your year and provides templates you can share on socials. In this way, Spotify uses customer-driven data to help connect with their customers, spreading the Spotify name – so smart if you ask me.
I’d love to hear which of these storytelling trends you are most eager to try in 2023.
