Things are changing quickly in the online space of sales and marketing. What “worked” in 2019, isn’t working anymore, and it is more important than ever before to share over sell.
We all know that people use social media predominantly because they are looking to be either: a) entertained, b) distracted, or c) educated. They are not looking to be sold to.
So, you are probably asking…
How do we use social media platforms to build our businesses if we can’t use them to sell?
Carefully, consciously, and consistently, I will answer. Keep reading, because I am going to tell you FIVE of my best trade secrets right here, right now.
- Be patient and nurture new relationships with care – much like you would a new seed that you’ve planted.
- Engage in groups and chat to new people with NO agenda. Just get to know people, find common interests, and build trust.
- Don’t include a call to action all of the time (or even most of the time). Only 5-10% of your posts should be promotional, the rest should be compelling information and resources.
- Recognize that every time you try to sell to people (especially ones that you have just met) you risk compromising the trust you are building.
- Tell them what they want to know, not what you want to tell them. I know you are excited about all of the cool features of your products, and some of your customers will be interested in cool features, but what they REALLY want to know are the benefits. HOW the products will help them.
Think of yourself as a problem solver.
When you hone in on WHO you are aiming to serve (check out my free downloadable asset on creating your Customer Persona), it will become clear as to WHAT your target audience is looking for – what changes are they looking to make to improve their lifestyle, what issues are they having that you can provide a solution for, etc…
Share Over Sell
Bonus Tip: A good rule of thumb is to always stop and think (before you press the “post” button), “WHO does this serve, and is it purposeful?”
- Be generous. People may react negatively to marketing, but they respond positively to generosity. Nothing builds trust like sharing good, old fashioned, honest and useful content.
Essentially, the premise here is to give more than you take. Take on the role of the educator. Your primary role is to share information – in the form of tips and tricks, free resources, and interesting facts.
Initially, this may be a bit challenging if you’ve been conditioned to sell, sell, sell for as long as you can remember. However, today’s consumers are immune to your sales messages. They are downright overloaded, overwhelmed, and overdone with being sold to.
So, take a step back and enjoy things from a different viewpoint. Focus on educating and building trust.
- Tell a story. In fact, tell lots of stories.
The more you can be relatable (i.e. the more people identify with who you are as a person and the more they can see elements of themselves in you) the faster you will build that level of trust. Storytelling is a form of attraction marketing that allows your audience to catch a glimpse inside your day to day.
Here are some of my tips on how to seamlessly build stories into your marketing content:
- Keep a notebook with you and jot down interesting events/thoughts as they come to you throughout the day
- Always think about your audience – your stories should have an intentional message and a purpose (even if that purpose is merely to entertain)
- Don’t over think it – if you’re stuck and don’t know how to get started, check out my, 7 Storytelling Secrets
- Just be YOU. I’m going to level with you…your audience is smart. They are savvy, and they can sense authenticity (or a lack thereof) a mile away.
With that said – get comfortable in your own skin. You don’t need to impress anyone or try to be like anyone else. The people you attract will follow and trust you because of YOU, and nobody else.
In summary, when we purposefully share over sell, we use the foundations of Attraction Marketing. It is a proven fact that people buy from whom they like, know, and trust.
Educate over pitch. Give over take. Share over sell.
