Artificial Intelligence (AI) assisted writing is taking the world by storm.
Several platforms now exist that can sift through large amounts of data found in articles and on web pages and produce “original” written work for you. These programs can help with writing, research, idea generation and more.
While you may be tempted to use AI-assisted writing for your next blog post, social media caption, or an e-book, you should be mindful that it should not replace human writing.
Here are Three Things to Consider when using AI-Assisted Writing
#1: Emotion Drives Storytelling
While it’s true that AI-assisted writing can process large amounts of information in a small period, it’s missing one critical piece that comes with good storytelling – emotion.
Emotions are what drive our stories and connect us to others; emotions are what make us human. I’m sure you’ve heard me rave about how storytelling is essential; well, to share meaningful stories, we need human experiences shared by humans.
People will follow you, buy your products or invest in your services not because you produce a lot of informational content but because you produce meaningful and relevant content for you and them.
#2: Your Niche Wants Specific Content
With so much information on the internet, people want to read something catered to them, so refining your niche and understanding your ideal client is essential. Remember that your niche is whom you want to support through your writing.
AI-assisted writing will produce general content that may not be relevant to your audience. The broader your writing is, the less clear it will be whom you are trying to serve through your business, and let’s face it, we would all choose the expert rather than the person who generally knows a little about everything.
#3: Your Voice Represents Your Brand/Values
Your written voice represents you. It encompasses your brand, values and what you are most passionate about. This is something that AI cannot mirror because the way you write about a given topic will depend on your life experiences and personal values. As a writer or someone creating content for your business, people will get to know your personality and voice over time – this will keep them coming back for more.
AI-assisted writing isn’t all bad…
If you do want to use AI-assisted writing, here are some of the ways it can benefit you:
- Idea generation
- Overcoming writer’s block
- Becoming familiar with a topic
- Supporting your research
- Identifying relevant trends
For example, Grammarly is an AI-assisted writing tool that I love. It checks for plagiarism and spelling and even offers suggestions for sentence revision. But does it give me the perfect revision every time? Does it replace my writing team? Of course not. But it does help support me with reviewing on those busier days.
Treat AI-assisted writing tools as an assistant, not a replacement for human writing.
Let’s honour our voices, stories and audience and share stories the way they were meant to be shared – with emotion, expression and personality.
And, on a final note, if you are spending time writing and creating content — don’t you want to be comfortable knowing the information is yours? Unfortunately, the topic of intellectual property and the copyright of produced work is missing immensely from the conversation.
Whether AI-generated works are eligible for copyright protection varies from each country. However, substantial human involvement is generally required for its eligibility.
There are doubts about whether works generated by artificial intelligence tools should be eligible for copyright protection. AI-generated works do not apply to copyright protection requirements because they are not the result of human creativity. (Generative AI Copyright Concerns you must know in 2023)
In my opinion, these conversations should be happening more often than how fast you (AI) wrote your most recent book or piece of content.

I fully agree, no voice. However, I am already seeing influencers using AI to completely write a book and suggestions for illustrations. I will not be using AI.
