Your founder’s story is the story that shares the origin behind your product, service, business, or brand. It is your unique story.

This is one of the most important stories you will share in your business because it gives people a sense of your values and purpose and builds credibility and an authentic connection.

The founder’s story often serves as an inspiration to others, for instance:

  • Sara Blakely was selling fax machines door to door when she founded her company Spanx, now valued at $1.2 billion.
  • Oprah Winfrey overcame childhood challenges and went on to create a multi-award-winning daytime talk show, contribute to charities and inspire women worldwide.
  • Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team only to go on and become one of the greatest players of all time.

Sharing your founder’s story takes courage.

However, vulnerability can help you and your business build meaningful connections with your audience. When you share your story, you let people know that there is a person behind your brand; even better, they get to know who you are.

Here are some key elements you can consider sharing in your founder’s story:

  • The pivotal moment – what was the moment that sparked you to make a change in your life or build your business?
  • Your transformation – who were you before and after the pivotal moment?
  • Your challenge – what challenges did you face along the way? This can relate to the time leading up to the pivotal moment or any other challenges you navigated as you built your brand and business.
  • Your values –what drives you to do what you do? Whom do you serve? Who inspires you to continue to grow your business and your reach?
  • Your ambitions – what has your journey been like so far? What do you aspire to achieve with your business in the future?

Take out a pen and paper and write down all of these responses, then weave them into a short, impactful story – this can take some time but is so worth it. Along the way, you might even discover something new about yourself. This is also a great way to appreciate how far you have come.

Share your story with someone you trust and see what they think. Then, once you feel ready, share your story in the medium that best represents you – video, audio, text – you may even feel called to write a book about your journey.

We all have a story worthy of being shared. Your founder’s story is the story of you. Don’t be afraid to share it; as you do, celebrate how far you have come.
