Storytelling is an intrinsic part of our humanity.

Stories shape us, they define us, and they help us connect to one another.

A good story has always been a part of successful marketing campaigns, right? However, they have never been more important than right here and right now.

Why is this about Storytelling? customer persona

Social media, globalization, and the gig economy make the small business space busy and LOUD. To be heard and listened to today, it’s important to stand out from other businesses in your industry and marketplace.

More than ever, your audience is looking to be inspired and engaged. They don’t want empty promises or platitudes. They are interested in authenticity and real connection. And they need to connect emotionally with the product or service you are selling and want to trust the brands they interact with.

Storytelling can help take your brand from good to great.

Here are some of my TOP TIPS on how to make your stories stand out:

  1. Identify the hero of your story. Typically, this is someone who thinks and acts like your ideal customer. They will share similar values and interests and be relatable.

If you are unsure who your ideal customer is, look at my free download, The Customer Persona Worksheet. Understanding WHOM you are targeting with your marketing (and WHERE to find them) is amazingly helpful information.

  1. Determine what problem you solve. You know the products or services you sell are great, but how will you inform prospective customers of that without coming off as sales-y or pushy?
Conversational stories (i.e., not full of facts and stats) help to do this.

Some of the best stories are testimonials that take a less formal or structured approach in their telling.

  1. Present yourself as a guide who is there to help your ideal customer by solving a problem or concern they have. You understand WHY your customer wants to solve this problem – and you have a straightforward solution to help them do just that. But you need to do it gently, slowly, and consistently.

Remember that people are looking for their problems to be solved. But, they do not want to be sold to. This is a subtly nuanced skill that takes time and practice to develop. However, the results will be so worth the effort!

  1. Draw on real-life examples to tell the story of how your hero accomplishes their goal (i.e., has their problem solved). The more relatable and honest the example is, the better. It’s okay to play on some vulnerability and create an emotional response. In fact, I encourage it!

The best way to get your audience emotionally invested is to incorporate words that inspire a sense of curiosity, urgency, and trust.

For example, try using any of these words in your next story:

  • secret, behind-the-scenes, inside scoop
  • magical, remarkable, freebie
  • uplifted, supported, fulfilled

How do these words make you feel? Now it’s your turn. Think of words that inspire you, that encourage you, or that make you feel safe. Write them down, and then, the next time you write copy for your social media posts, integrate emotionally charged words to create more impact with your readers.

  1. Leave people wanting more. The best stories don’t give away the entire cookie all at once! You want to tease out some information and inspiration gradually, but you want people to return for more.

Always ensure that what you share is valuable to your reader (i.e., it considers their interests, needs, and desires), but don’t give away all of the value all at once.

Storytelling for social media marketing is designed in “installments” or chapters.

Your goal is to hook your readers, leave them guessing a little bit, and get them interested in what is coming next.

There you have it! These are just a few of the key elements I incorporate into the storytelling I use for my own business and for the small business clients I write for.

I encourage you to Use Your Voice and Make An Impact.

🎲 Vegas 2024 🎲

We headed to Vegas back in April to catch the beginning of pool season 🌊 but it was too chilly to swim.

However, the weather gave us room to experience a sunrise hot air balloon with some super cool people.

Just when I thought I had done it all in Vegas, we had a few days of brand new experiences, including a phenomenal brunch at @lavolv 🙌🏼

Cheers to new things & the evolution of my life 🫶🏼

Drama Dots is perfect .. 🤣 Here are a few others: (see what I did there?)

What’s the interrobang?
The interrobang is a combination of the question mark (?) and the exclamation mark (!).

What is the snark mark?
The snark mark, or irony mark, was created to signpost all kinds of sarcasm. The backward question mark has undergone many stylistic tweaks

What’s the manicule?
The manicule is the ultimate blast from the past. Take a look at medieval manuscripts, and you’ll see tiny hands drawn in the margins of the page. Why? To point out the most important parts of a piece of writing.

What’s the certitude point?
This certitude mark is the equivalent of saying “no further questions” at the end of a sentence. The symbol looks like an exclamation mark crossed with a hyphen

What’s the acclamation point?
This is one of the friendliest, most unusual punctuation marks out there. The acclamation point was invented by Hervé Bazin in 1966 to express kindness and familiarity. The shape of the mark – two exclamation marks sharing a point

💬 Scott Stratten once said ‘If you believe business is built on relationships, make building them your business.’

Take a look at the current state of your business. Regardless of the industry you are in. Whether you work on your own or as part of a team. Be it your career or your own business.

What do those relationships look like?

Are they about the same as the state of your business?

One of the reasons people are most successful, and when it comes to being an absolute rockstar in their industry, are the relationships that they have created and how they make their clients (prospects, customers, colleagues, etc.) FEEL.

Think of the television show CHEERS (dating myself, maybe). You walked into that bar and ‘everyone knows your name’ and, ‘they’re even glad you came’.

Model that. Seriously.

Relationships are priceless currency.

I promise.

Listen to Scott (+ @chantellespeaks who happens to be one of the most incredibly gifted + beautiful humans I’ve ever met!)

I’ve been thinking a lot lately. THKK, thinking a lot is my thing 🤷🏻‍♀️

But, I’ve been thinking about something I hear many of my clients say: “What if no one cares about my story?”, “What if no one reads my book?”.

And the truth is, many of us have shared experiences. While our stories may not be ENTIRELY unique, our desire to share them is.

The power is knowing that your story matters & will make a difference to someone, somewhere. And, with over 8 billion people in this world, there is a good likelihood that “no one” is not even a part of the equation.

Your story matters. It matters to you, it matters to me, and it will matter to many others.

You’ll never know until you make it happen 📚 Share your voice, make an impact.

It certainly did not happen overnight.

It took a lifetime of semi-consistent writing.

It took learning.

It took many ebbs & flows.

It took a deep desire to want to share people’s stories.

It takes passion & discipline.

And, here we are📍

It’s time to write your book ✍🏼

— forget about the perfect time
— start with 30 minutes a day
— use voice memos while you’re on the go (or feeling stuck!)
— reward yourself
— use an outline (free outline for you on my website)
— consider working with a book coach or ghostwrote (I gotchu)
