You likely consume more stories each day than you realize – communicating with others, scrolling social media, or listening to your favourite podcast are just a few examples of ways we take in so many stories daily.

Over the past few years, the digital revolution has changed how we tell stories.

Here are some of the Top 2022 Storytelling Trends

2022 storytelling trends

#1 Real, Raw Stories

Today, most people value real, honest, and authentic content.

We all face challenges, so seeing them told through a story builds a connection and makes people feel seen and heard.

Wrote a book? Your audience doesn’t just want to see the final product – they want to understand what compelled you to write it, the ups and downs of the writing process, and how you feel now that the work is finally finished.

#2 Community & Co-creation

People not only understand the importance of sharing their own stories, but they also see the immense benefit of creating platforms for others to tell their stories. More and more influencers use platforms like Facebook and Instagram to co-create with community members through live, interactive sessions.

Another medium that utilizes this is podcasts – where guests are invited to share their stories and honest opinions through live discussions and Q&A sessions.

Even big brands share the story of their products and services through customer testimonials.

#3 Emphasize the Journey

Storytelling is becoming more and more focused on the journey and the emotions that are felt along the way rather than just the goal. For instance, when purchasing diapers, customers may be looking for an environmentally friendly and leakproof brand. Rather than focusing solely on the benefits of their products, diaper companies will emphasize the relationship between parent and child – because the less you worry about leaks, the more time you have to build a connection with your baby.

#4 Visual Storytelling

It’s no secret that social media is continuing to blow up, and with new apps and features being launched regularly, storytelling has expanded to so much more than words on a page. Creators use colourful and interesting graphics to keep their audience interested, and more and more people are now using video to tell stories.

The Instagram “story” feature is a great example of how visual storytelling builds community, shares perspectives, and sells products and services.

These are just a few of the storytelling trends you may encounter today, but things will continue to evolve as we move into 2023.

You take in so many stories daily, but what storytelling trend will you use to share your message?
